2013 Scope & Sequence Workshop Description

The Kilgo Curriculum Plan is the most effective Texas Curriculum Design for significantly improving student achievement on STAAR and providing equity for all students.  Based on Margaret Kilgo's copyrighted research model and findings, this model provides:

  • A consistent instructional model/curriculum design for teaching and assessing the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of STAAR without multiple-choice practice or test-taking strategies.

  • Deconstruction of TEKS/SEs for depth and complexity.

  • Comparison of original and 2012 Mathematics TEKS/SEsMathematics Scope & Sequence for Gr. K-2 (non-tested grades) will be based on the new TEKS/SEs. All other grades will be based on the current student expectations but will contain the comparison of the current Mathematics TEKS/SEs to the new.

  • Dual coding of process and content standards (TEKS/SEs) in K-8 Mathematics, K-12 Science, K-12 Social Studies.

  • Dual coding of all Reading genres and Figure 19, with Kilgo-developed reading comprehension questions TEKS-based, for K-12 ELAR.

  • Coding of TEKS/SEs for Readiness and Supporting, STAAR/EOC, and SAT.

  • Vertical alignment for Mathematics, Reading, and Science, K-12.

Meeting the Requirements the State Of Texas Assessment Of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and End-Of-Course (EOC) Through a District-Wide and/or Campus-Wide Scope & Sequence Curriculum Plan

The 2013 Scope & Sequence sessions will have a total focus on STAAR and EOC with total integration and update of all of the STAAR and EOC specifications and requirements into the Scope & Sequence notebook materials and the unique, copyrighted Kilgo Research Model. These sessions will be based on Margaret Kilgo’s most current, in-depth research on STAAR, grades 3-8, and EOC, grades 9-11, in Science, Mathematics, English Language Arts/Reading and Social Studies.

The Kilgo Scope & Sequence workshops support school districts and campuses in developing and implementing a dynamic curriculum plan by providing a data-driven, research-based recommended sequence or pacing for teaching the Texas curriculum standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Student Expectations (SEs), and aligning classroom instruction and assessment to the depth and complexity of the Texas standards-based assessments, STAAR and EOC, in all four core subject areas.

Participants will receive an organized curriculum framework with specific recommended pacing in an Excel format on CDs for teaching and assessing the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of STAAR and EOC at all grade levels, not just the tested grade levels, including all of the components critical for improving student achievement equitably for all students, grades K-12.

By participating in the 2013 Kilgo Scope & Sequence workshops, school districts will be preparing teachers and administrators for the 2014 STAAR and EOC by following the Kilgo Research Model for implementation of a standards-based district-wide and campus-wide curriculum and assessment plan based on the TEKS/SEs with a focus on higher standards in classroom instruction and assessment.

Scope & Sequence workshops in Science, Mathematics, Language Arts/Reading, and Social Studies, grades K-12, will include:

  • In-depth review and study of the latest Kilgo research on the relationship between the Texas curriculum standards, the TEKS/SEs, and the new Texas assessments, STAAR and EOC, including a process for teaching and assessing the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of STAAR and EOC;

  • Scope & Sequence charts in an Excel format in hard copy and on CD developed by Margaret Kilgo with a specific sequence to teach the TEKS/SEs including:

Sequence for pacing instruction of the TEKS/SEs based on current student achievement TEKS/SEs statewide data trends and Kilgo research on the relationship between the TEKS/SEs and STAAR and EOC;

Coding of “high stakes” TEKS/SEs tested on STAAR and EOC;

Coding of depth and complexity alignment between TEKS/SEs and STAAR and EOC;

Coding alignment of the SAT in reading and mathematics;

  • Procedures for customizing the Kilgo Scope & Sequence charts in the development and implementation of a local school district and/or campus curriculum plan and adding local district resources; and

  • An overview of the Kilgo copyrighted process for developing and organizing the district and/or campus assessment plan, including how to write questions 100% aligned with the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of STAAR and EOC.

Science Scope & Sequence Charts.
In addition to the components for all four core subject areas listed above, the 2013 Scope & Sequence charts for Science will include:

  • Alignment objectives for science so skills and concepts can be introduced at earlier grade levels and developed to mastery prior to testing on STAAR, grades 5 and 8, and EOC for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; and

  • Dual coding of process and content standards (TEKS/SEs) in K-12 Science.

Mathematics Scope & Sequence Charts.
In addition to the components for all four core subject areas listed above, the 2013 Scope & Sequence charts for Mathematics will include:

  • Alignment objectives for K-12 Mathematics so skills and concepts can be introduced at earlier grade levels and developed to mastery prior to testing on STAAR, grades 3-8, and EOC for Algebra I, Algebra II, and High School Geometry;

  • Comparison of the old Mathematics TEKS/SEs with the new.  Mathematics Scope & Sequence for Gr. K-2 (non-tested grades) will be based on the new TEKS/SEs. All other grades will be based on the old student expectations but will contain the comparison of the old Mathematics TEKS/SEs to the new; and

  • Dual coding of process and content standards (TEKS/SEs) in K-8 Mathematics.

English Language Arts/Reading (K-12) Scope & Sequence Charts.
In addition to the components for all four core subject areas listed above, the 2013 Scope & Sequence charts for English Language Arts/Reading (ELAR) a will include:

  • Vertical alignment objectives for ELAR K-12 in reading comprehension so all thinking and comprehension skills are introduced in a developmental sequence and developed to mastery prior to testing on STAAR and EOC across all TEKS strands and genres;

  • Reading comprehension question stems in English (K-12) aligned with the ELAR TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of STAAR, grades, 3-8, and EOC for English I,II,III; and

  • Dual coding of all Reading genres and Figure 19, with Kilgo-developed reading comprehension questions TEKS-based, for K-12 ELAR.

Social Studies Scope & Sequence Charts.
In addition to the above list of components, the 2012 Scope & Sequence charts for Social Studies will include:

  • Dual coding of process and content standards (TEKS/SEs) in K-12 Social Studies; and

  • Scope & sequence will be based solely on the 2013 Social Studies TEKS/SEs.

Scope & Sequence Workshop Training Components

1. Developing a dynamic school district curriculum plan

  • Purposes of Scope & Sequence Curriculum Plans; and
